Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: Experiences such as working with non profits on reproductive health issues, growing up as the oldest of five children and engaging one-on-one within my community as a sexuality educator, has uniquely drawn me to support families through this time of transition. My goal in everything I do is to help others feel comfortable, empowered and celebrated in their body.
What led you to become a Doula?: My whole life I've been fascinated by the body, pregnancy and parenthood. I believe an important element of feeling empowered in your body and through a life transition is to have access to resources, community and unbiased, non judgmental support. Hiring a doula is one way to find that, and I'm so honored to provide this service to growing families in the DC Metro area.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I’ve been told by clients that I have a calming presence and give fantastic foot rubs. For a lot of folks in my life, I’m “that friend” that you can ask the “embarrassing” question about your body, you’d die to bring up with anyone else; and I’ll respond enthusiastically about how normal you are, how cool your body is and point you in the direction of resources that might make you feel better. I’ve been told my TMI threshold is very high.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I'm a huge fan of podcasts! They're free, downloadable audio files that are great for folks who don't have the time or attention span to sit down with a book or in front of a computer screen. Many are full of great educational information and often provide a platform to build community with other listeners. Some of my favorites for pregnant families and new parents are The Birthful Podcast and the Longest Shortest Time
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: My first thoughts are excitement for them and their family, and then I usually wonder if they are getting enough support. Even the most exciting growth, change and transition can be scary and hard without enough support.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: The best gift I can give a client is a calm presence and validation. They know their body and baby best, and sometimes they just need the reassurance that someone else trusts their gut instincts too
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Gilmore Girls and The X Files, don't make me choose!
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Wandering a new city is the best!
What is your favorite food?: Tacos, guacamole and a spicy margarita!
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Drinking coffee on my porch, crafting, trying new recipes and ending the day cuddled on the couch with my guy and pup watching Netflix
Who lives in your house?: I live with my partner Matt, and our Bassett Hound/Pittie mix Scully.
