Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I’m also a practicing Licensed Massage Therapist with certification in pre and post natal work. My bodywork was the catalyst for me becoming a doula; they two fields of work naturally compliment each other very well.
What led you to become a Doula?: My own pregnancy coupled with my existing work in the bodywork field. Early on in my massage therapy work I gravitated towards working in the niche segment of pre and post natal massage; I was then further catapulted into the world of birth when I became pregnant with my daughter in 2013 and I took my formal training to become a doula.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
“You were amazing! We seriously cannot thank you enough.” “ I must say that Amanda was so amazing and unbelievable through our labor. I would recommend her and you guys to anyone. Thanks so much!”
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Aside from the most current research based materials, I find great value in the doula community; specifically the ProDoula community. Virtually, there is are numerous FaceBook groups that always prove to be enlightening. But mostly I value the camaraderie, knowledge and experience of the women I work directly with at the agency where I work as an independent contractor, The Chicago Doulas.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: On a personal level, I see pieces of myself and remember how incredibly challenging those first few moths are. Everything felt new and a bit foreign, yet also completely natural and instinctual. Parenthood is filled with unpredictable paradoxes; we are pushed to places we never even knew existed. On a professional level, I see women facing new decisions who are making the best choices their families. Every family is inherently different, but regardless of how we all may vary everyone deserves to have all the necessary information to facilitate the best decisions for them.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: A safe space to confide with a nonjudgemental ear.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Sanibel Island, Florida
What is your favorite food?: Pizza (I mean I do live in Chicago!)
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Anything and everything with my family. We love heading to the park or some days we stay nestled at home practicing our instruments and making crafts; and we’re blessed with lots of friends and family that we love visiting with as well.
Who lives in your house?: My loving partner Josh, our incredibly sweet and very clever daughter Maeve, and our three ornery cats.
