Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have taught music lessons for over ten years. I was never the rigid, authoritarian type who required everyone to play the same music or achieve the same levels. My priority was that the students’ goals were met, that they had fun, and that they fell in love with music. Often, the students would be uncomfortable for the first several lessons: sure I was being nice only to trick them, waiting for me to turn into the trope of the mean, knuckle-rapping piano teachers of their imaginations. I was a doula for flutists before I ever even knew what a doula was! Not all of my students went on to become professionals, but they remembered their lessons and time with me very fondly.
What led you to become a Doula?: I had a less-than-ideal experience with my first birth. For my second birth, I hired a doula. She was only there for 7 minutes due to the quick nature of that birth, but she was SO helpful for those 7 minutes. It became crystal clear to me how valuable it was to have someone in the room whose sole purpose was keeping me comfortable and centered. I wanted to be a part of that support system for others.
