Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have been working as a birth professional for the past 11 years. I have been advocating for maternal health and wellness for more than 17 years. I have a passion for both women's' and childbirth health. In addition to my experience as a doula and childbirth educator, I am at my intern level for my master's degree in Clinal Counseling. My desire is to both support perinatal mood disorders but also teach and educate professionals on preventing birth trauma and being aware of perinatal mood disorders and best practices for treatment.
What led you to become a Doula?: I have been interested in birth work since I first saw a placenta in 5th grade at a career day. I started down the medical school route until I changed routes and completed my bachelor's degree in Psychology. After becoming pregnant and having my first child I became very aware of the need for more birth professionals and the rights of birthing people.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
Both my clients and Nurses and doctors alike say I am very knowledgeable, offer evidence-based information, and support clients’ rights to choose and then support those choices. Just the other day a nurse I worked with while supporting a client for about 12 hours at the hospital with a wonderful unmedicated vaginal birth said that she wished every person that gave birth at her hospital had support like me.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I enjoy Evidence-Based Birth products and information, motherboard, and my website.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: Usually, my thoughts are of joy for them, and then what do they need. Are they informed? Do they have questions and access to resources to support themselves and their family?
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: The best gift I can give a parent is a protective space to have their birth journey. Support their wishes and provide unbiased non- judgemental information whenever they ask for it.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Big Band theory and Anne with an E
What is your favorite place to vacation?: I love the beach but anyplace full of peace and joy is great to visit
What is your favorite food?: Cucumbers
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: If I am spending the day with my family my favorite thing is to be outside maybe a city tour or museum or park. Laughing and spending time together. If I am alone I would either read up on a current subject of interest or go get some needed pampering with a friend. I am fine to eat at a restaurant alone or see a movie. I most enjoy the peace and quiet outside when I am alone.
Who lives in your house?: I live with my husband of 22 years and our 5 children currently ages 8-18. I also have 2 dogs, fish, 2 guinea pigs, a rabbit, and 2 bearded dragons. There are always tons of kids and friends in and out of my home whenever they need a place to rest or a yard to play in.
