Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I attended my first birth 20 years ago, I was only 18. I personally have 7 children and every birth was different from natural to c-section and having twins. Each family's birthing experience is different and exciting! I have also been a pre-school teacher for 15 years!
What led you to become a Doula?: Well, 20 years ago I helped my ex mother-in-law in a very hard labor. I found that I loved being the support person and helping my father-in-law as they looked to me for support as I had my son 3 months earlier, and I was only 19! And I was hooked! It has been years and I have been the one my friends and family come to for all things birth related, honestly I love this calling!
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
My friends and family say that I am caring and giving and would do pretty much whatever I could if someone needed me. I am honest with my thoughts and actions. My best friend said that I am loyal ,reliable and crazy fun.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: What I have learned mostly comes from my mom, she is a great resource for me when I have questions. I have learned a lot about parenting from being a mom of almost 21 years. There are plenty of books you could read, but having a tribe of other people to bounce ideas off of and vent to is one of the most important things I have found.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: When I see a new parent or a pregnant person I am EXCITED for them! Bringing a new life into this world is amazing whether it is a blended family, a new family or a surrogate.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: The best gift I can give new parents is the support and confidence in themselves so that THEY know that they know what they are doing, being a ear for them if questions arise, and cheering them on when times get tough!
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Outlander, Game of Thrones, Call the Midwife, American Housewife
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Albuquerque, New Mexico to see my family and eat yummy food!
What is your favorite food?: Hot wings and Saltgrass Steakhouse
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: On my days off I like to sleep, hangout with my family and go to movies. I also LOVE to go out to the bars (not to drink) BUT TO SING!! I love karaoke, so I spend a lot of time singing.
Who lives in your house?: Well, I have been married for 6 years to my fantastic husband and we have a blended family. I have 4 boys from my first marriage and I adopted my stepson not long after I married my husband. We have 2 little girls together (twins). My oldest is in the U.S. Navy so he is not home, but the others are and they are all a big help in making my dream of becoming a Doula come true. We also have 4 cats and 3 dogs!!
