Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I've given birth twice and before doing so I researched a lot to figure out what type of experience I wanted (because that was something I had never had to think of before). I am curious, open and accepting of people & opinions different from me & mine. I've supported my friends and sisters through many things - including pregnancy and early motherhood & I find it energizing. I know how hard it can be to navigate the huge changes going on in your body, in your family, in your home and in your life. I want to be there for new families experiencing that huge change and help them to have positive healthy experiences and warm feelings & memories to look back on.
What led you to become a Doula?: I became interested in birth work after I went through my own birthing experience. I was the first of my friends to get pregnant and give birth, so I was the person everyone came to for advice and information and encouragement. I've loved being the go-to person for all things pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. I've found my passion through my own journey to motherhood - empowering, educating, and encouraging women through their own birth experiences and early parenthood.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I’ve been told I’m a good listener.
People come to me for honesty, nonjudgmental advice, & acceptance. That’s not a comment, but its how I’m valued to the people around me.
I’ve been told I’m a good teacher and leader, making everyone feel valued and comfortable.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: My midwife & general googling for pregnancy Janet Lansbury for parenting
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I want to talk to them about their experience so far - how are they feeling? What are their plans for birth - if they have a plan, do they want to hear my story, do they want to meet my midwife, have they watched the business of being born, what books have they read? I get a little excited to talk to people and see if they are educated about their options and I want them to have confidence in the decisions they're making about birth.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Emotional Support & Encouragement. Rest. Food. Water.
