Meet Your ProDoula

Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I am a certified labor, postpartum, and infant care doula through ProDoula. I’m also certified in both infant and adult CPR/First Aid and AED training. Birth/Doula work comes naturally to me, especially postpartum work. I find it easy to connect with others and others often feel at ease in my presence. I feel so fortunate when a family chooses me to support them in their home and birth space. It’s such a sacred experience. I especially love doing over night postpartum work. It’s such a magical quiet time in a home. Knowing that I’m helping families find peaceful, well rested evenings feels like such a gift to me. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of good sleep for the over all health of the family unit.

What led you to become a Doula?: My own experience! The process of growing, birthing, and raising a child is so fascinating to me. I am the mother of two amazing daughters. I had a labor doula with my second child, but not my first. I loved having her there! She knew exactly how to support me. She had the words and tools to help me feel calmer and more present during labor. With my first babe I felt slightly panicked and alone. A doula would have been so very helpful for my partner and myself.

What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:

Candace couldn’t have come at a better time. I tore really bad from having my baby and before she came to help, I was mostly having to sit alone in my room with my baby unable to move and take care of myself, or my kids. I didn’t have family or friends to come help and my husband couldn’t get work off. All I could think of was how much pain I was in. When Candace came, I was taken care of in every way. I was fed emotionally and physically, my meals were made, she took care of my son for me and helped me care for my baby girl.

She was also a great companion to visit with and talk with and I fully believe that because I had her companionship to take my mind off the pain, I was able to go from unable to walk to walking within 2 days of her being in my home. She was a priceless necessity, helper, and friend and I highly recommend her to anyone needing postpartum care! She is amazing as what she does and she does it with her whole heart.

What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?:

What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I remember what it was like for me when I was pregnant. I wonder if they have enough support. Are they getting enough sleep? Are they feeling heard? I want to tell them they're amazing and capable and strong. I want to tell them they're doing a good job.

What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: SUPPORT IS PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE! We are not meant to go through life alone. ALWAYS ask for help when you need it and accept the help when it’s offered. I understand how difficult it is for us to ask for help. We can’t be the good caregivers we’re expected to be if we’re not caring for ourselves in the process. Just take it and be grateful! You’ll have the energy to pass it forward soon enough.

What is your favorite TV show or movie?: "The Biggest Little Farm" Watch it! It's SO good!

What is your favorite place to vacation?: The beach

What is your favorite food?: No favorite. I just love food!

What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Gardening is what I do when I procrastinate. We love going to the lake, the river, the ocean. I'm an artist and a photographer. I love creating.

Who lives in your house?: I live with my two incredible daughters, two dogs and a cat named Otis.
