Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: The two most important experiences that are beneficial to my birth work is the first birth I ever witnessed and the birth of my son. I was young when I witnessed my first birth and was encouraged to be a part of the birth. That was so important to my doula path and I didn't even know it yet. To see life enter our world changed me. My own pregnancy and birth flipped my world upside down and set that fire in my soul. I knew after giving birth that I could do anything and I knew I wanted to be involved with pregnant and birthing women.
What led you to become a Doula?: When I became pregnant with my son, a fire in me was ignited. I became enthralled with all things birth. It was more than just an interest in my own birth. It was an interest and desire to learn more about birth everywhere and how it plays a part in others lives. After giving birth to my son, I knew the art of birth wasn't out of my life and I followed the path towards becoming a doula.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
People tell me I bring them great ease when I sit down with them and listen to them. I love hearing from others that I bring them joy and laughter and a sense of peace. I want to be able to provide that safe, joyous, and purposeful space for everyone.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Evidence Based Birth is my favorite resource for parents who want the straight up facts and evidence-based research. Another great resource for parents is KellyMom.com It is a website mostly dedicated to breastfeeding and for families who choose that path, this resource is extraordinary. Lastly, the parents around you who have been through it all! Find your mentors.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: When I see a pregnant woman or a new mom, my heart skips a beat! There is so much beauty in the pregnant mother and new mother. I want to ask them how they are doing and lend them an ear if they desire. It is so important for a woman to be heard during these times in her life.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Validation and consistent judgement-free support. There is no greater gift to give a new mom than the gift of helping her find her own strength and power.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Interstellar is my favorite movie ever. I love X-files and anything of that nature.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Chicago, IL is my most frequented vacation spot but my favorite vacation was to Spain.
What is your favorite food?: Anything Thai or Mexican.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: My favorite way to spend a day off is with my family. When we rise early, get out and get some coffee and just take on the city for the day, I am in my happy place. Curled up with a book, playing guitar or listening to podcasts are also things you can find me doing on my days off.
Who lives in your house?: My fiancee, Cam, and I share a cozy and eclectic space with our son, Ezra, in a Grand Rapids, Michigan.
