Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: Years of working in various hospitals and physician offices made me very comfortable with doctors, midwives, nurses, and other hospital staff. I work hard at fostering good relationships with the providers my clients hire. We’re all on the same team!
What led you to become a Doula?: I did my OB rotation of nursing school while pregnant with my first child and immediately knew birth is where I belonged! At first I assumed it would be as a nurse. But after my son was born, I found that friends and acquaintances (who had more children than I did!) kept coming to me with questions about pregnancy, birth and parenting. I realized I was more drawn to the relational side of nursing than the clinical. So after receiving my LPN, I stopped nursing school and began the steps to becoming a doula and childbirth educator.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
That I’m an encourager; that I don’t judge others; I’m accepting of others.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Favorite websites include www.lamaze.org, www.kellymom.com, and www.spinningbabies.com . The Natural Pregnancy Book by Aviva Romm, MD is a favorite book.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: When I see a pregnant woman, I can’t help but smile and feel excited for her, especially if it’s her first. I don’t even try to tell her that one day soon her world will stand still, life as she knew it will change, and her capacity to love will expand beyond what she ever thought possible. How can you possibly explain that to someone who hasn’t experienced it yet?!
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Time. Time to shower. Time to eat. Time to nap. Time to talk. Or time to just “be”…without feeling the need to do anything else besides nurture herself and her baby.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Downton Abbey and Longmire are probably my favorite TV shows currently playing. But I also love picking a series on Netflix, watching all the seasons available, then moving on to a new series. (White Collar, Psych, Fringe, and Murdoch Mysteries are some favorites.)
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Anywhere near water! I love camping and I love the Great Lakes. Some of my best family memories are from taking my kids camping on the Ontario side of Lake Huron.
What is your favorite food?: It’s a toss-up between Italian and Middle Eastern.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Being outside. Whether I’m biking, hiking or just reading a book, I want to be outside!
Who lives in your house?: The Hub: Jim The boys: Simeon, Judah, Benjamin, Elijah The Grandpa: My dad The Pets: Peanut, the old miniature dachshund; Othello, the fat, black cat The Ringmaster: Me
