Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have been supporting families, in many fashions, for the past 10 years. From being a nanny to attending births to coordinating home postpartum visits. I have been blessed to attend friends and family births as a support member in both early labor and active labor through to delivery. Through that I have witnessed (and personally experienced) a wide variety of labor and delivery scenarios which I feel is helpful in serving my clients. I currently work closely with a local hospital's postpartum unit to coordinate home nurse visits for new mothers and have been doing so for the past 5 years.
What led you to become a Doula?: I have always been fascinated with pregnancy and birth but I REALLY became interested in birth work after the birth of my 3rd child. I had the most amazing midwife and, I swear, I still think my L&D nurse was straight from the Gods. Even though my birth didn’t go exactly how I had envisioned I could not have asked for a better experience. I felt empowered in a way I never had before. I felt this unconditional support and confidence from my birth team. Even though I had given birth two other times this time was different, it was a beautiful bonding experience. After that I knew in my gut that I wanted to help other women feel the same way.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
Charis is genuine, determined, dependable, fun loving and relatable
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Kellymom.com, ACOG, The Birth Partner, Breastfeeding Made Simple just to name a few.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: My immediate thoughts are happiness and love. They may not even realize how intensely they will feel these things (heck, i had zero clue) but they will. I picture them becoming a parent, seeing their baby and can’t help but smile…
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Non-judgmental support… Acknowledging their feelings, whatever they may be, and giving them a safe space to feel them without fear of being judged or dismissed.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: My favorite TV Show? oh man….if I had to narrow it down to one all time winning choice, ya know the one I’ve never gotten tired of-the one I could stand to binge all day if I had the time, I’d have to say Grey’s Anatomy.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: My favorite place to vacation is Florida. Give me some place to relax with sun on my face and warm sand between my toes and I’m one happy girl. I will add that, although I’ve never been, I think Washington State/Colorado look equally beautiful. I can’t wait to experience the nature out west one day
What is your favorite food?: My favorite food is Pizza, from traditional to specialty it always hits the spot; but it’s a definitely a hard tie with some good ol homemade mac and cheese.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: My favorite way to spend my off days is outside with my family (or alone with a good book lol); nothing beats the fresh air when the weather is nice. We love to go hiking, swimming or to the park. I’m also a sucker for a good bonfire!
Who lives in your house?: We joke that our subdivision home is more like a little farm, and some days a small circus lol. All in all it’s me, my husband, my 3 children, two dogs, a garage cat and 3 chickens in the backyard.
