Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I spent a lot of time researching pregnancy and birth during my own pregnancy, and offered resources that I found helpful to several of my friends who gave birth around the same time and after me. I love to have conversations with people, and many of my friends and I have talked a lot about motherhood and womanhood and birth. Because of that, I feel that I have gotten to see multiple wonderful perspective on how to begin the motherhood journey, and I've come to know that there is no way to do something.
What led you to become a Doula?: Even before I had my daughter, I was fascinated in the birth process, and the transformative experience of labor, birth and new motherhood. When I gave birth to my little girl, my passion for birth work exploded! My sister, best friend and mother-in-law were there at the birth of my daughter, and they acted as the most amazing doulas I could have asked for. I wanted to do for someone else what they were able to do for me. I want to empower women to make choices they are confident in and happy about surrounding their birth experience.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
People say that I am good listener. People have told me I make them feel at ease and they feel comfortable being themselves around me. Friends, family and acquaintances say that I am genuine, authentic and trustworthy.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: My favorite pregnancy and parenting books are "Birthing From Within," by Pam England and Rob Horowitz, "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth" by Ina Mae Gaskin, "Baby Catcher: Chronicles of a Modern Midwife," by Peggy Vincent, and the ver hilarious and relatable "I Just Want to Pee Along," by Jen Mann
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: When I see a pregnant women, I remember the excitement, and I also remember the fear of the unknown. I think about the fear that pregnant moms can have about how they will handle labor, what it will feel like, how breastfeeding will go, and what those first days at home will hold. When I see a new mom, I just to hug her, do some dishes for her, and be there to listen to her and offer encouragements.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Giving birth is deeply transformative for many women. The greatest gift I could give a new mom is to just sit and listen if she wants to talk. I would let her know it is ok and normal to be happy and sad at the same time. I would let her know that I support her choices, and that she knows what is best for her and her family. I would let her know I am confident in her.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: My favorite movie is "Great Expectations," and my favorite show (right now) is "This is Us."
