Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have been supporting women in pregnancy, labor and the postpartum period since 1997. I have worked with teens, single moms, married couples, first time birthers and 5th time birthers. I've been part of inductions, medicated births, and lots tricky deliveries; fast births, long labors and everything in between. I have experience with all kinds of interventions and Cesarean section as well. Since 2018 I have made my passion my business and offering Childbirth Education is an exciting addition to my services!
What led you to become a Doula?: My passion for pregnancy and childbirth is as old as my earliest memories. The birth of a younger sibling ignited a powerful interest in pregnant women, new babies and growing families. I have turned that interest into an ability to provide sensitive and knowledgeable support before, during and after the birth of your new baby. I see every pregnancy and birth as a miracle and as a trained Doula, I feel honored to be able to contribute my expertise to women and families in the Walla Walla Valley and beyond.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
“I had peace of mind … knowing Chris would be right there beside us… she encouraged me with whatever decision I made. I would highly recommend her expertise. You won’t be disappointed.”
“With Chris by my side I was able to achieve my goal (of an unmedicated birth). She was super supportive, she made me feel like it was all about me and my baby! I recommend Chris to be your doula…”
“You were constantly available to answer questions, make suggestions and just be there with a loving word or touch. Your positivity and authenticity made a big difference in the challenging moments. Thank you so much, from the bottom of our grateful hearts!”
“She helped me cope with the pains of birth, helped get my questions answered, kept me in the know and strong. When the time came and I decided I needed an epidural, we had a plan and she was there to support it. When the time came to push she was by my side, talking me through it…”
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I'm a huge fan of Penny Simkin and Ina May Gaskin and their books are so helpful. The easy to understand information in the book "Natural Hospital Birth" by Cynthia Gabriel is essential in my opinion. Hand in Hand Parenting's website www.handinhandparenting.org/ is a terrific resource for parents at any stage in child rearing.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: For my entire life, whenever I see a pregnant woman I want to talk to her! I want to hear her experiences and ask her questions. I want to connect with her about the wonder and joy, the fear and the excitement. I want to hold her baby and talk about his development and needs. I want to make sure she has support, knows where to get guidance, I want to offer my own help.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: I think the best gift that I bring to the table as a birth worker is judgement free support coupled with my vast experience. I love to really connect with people as they venture into parenthood, and the intimacy of pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period is such a beautiful time to bond and nurture new families.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: I love documentaries and true crime...
What is your favorite place to vacation?: I have been to Cabo twice and really loved it, I can't wait to visit the Caribbean.
What is your favorite food?: My favorite food would have to be Mexican or Italian, especially if prepared by my talented husband.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I love to travel when I can find the time... A date night with my hubby or drinks on the patio with friends is a great way to spend time. Family BBQ's, long drives, binge-watching, reading and crochet all get my attention as time allows...
Who lives in your house?: I live in my dream house with the man I married in 1993 and our four amazing kids who dominate our home. We have 3 sweet doggies and one elderly cat, too.
