Meet Your ProDoula

Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I offer my enthusiasm and passion for "all things birth and baby" to help families achieve their unique goals with confidence. I volunteer as an accredited La Leche League Leader and also serve the community as Secretary of the Lake Erie Breastfeeding Coalition. Though I have extensive breastfeeding experience, I have experience with other infant feeding methods as well. I am a ProDoula Certified Childbirth Educator and am currently teaching classes. Attending conferences and workshops year-round, I strive to keep up-to-date with the most recent, evidence-based information available. I gained my knowledge from many different outlets including: professional trainings, conferences I’ve attended, evidence-based literature, my personal experiences, and narratives told by mothers I have met along the way. I strive to never stop learning.

What led you to become a Doula?: My own personal experiences as a mother have ignited a passion in me to study pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. I recognize and delight in the fact that everyone has unique needs and goals and I encourage women to make the decisions that are best for their family. There is no such thing as a “one size fits all” approach when it comes to pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:

I have been described as patient, reliable, compassionate, motivated, knowledgeable, organized, and loyal.

What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: My “go to” website is Kellymom and my favorite blog is Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth is my favorite book for pregnancy. The book provides valuable and empowering childbirth information, in addition to several inspiring birth stories. Though these resources can be great tools to gain ideas from, I believe every birthing family has different needs and encourage them to follow their own unique path.

What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I am in awe of all that our bodies are capable of and the immense strength women possess. I often find myself wondering if she has the support she’ll need in order to thrive (not merely, survive) as she enters into her new role as a mother.

What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Support that is truly judgement-free is invaluable and rare. As a pregnant woman, it can seem as if everyone is offering up their idea of the “best way” to do things. I strive to instill confidence in women as they navigate through all the choices that come their way.

What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Grey’s Anatomy

What is your favorite place to vacation?: My family plans one vacation a year and we try not to visit the same place twice. Our latest excursion was to Washington D.C. I find it exciting and gratifying to see and experience things through my children’s eyes.

What is your favorite food?: Chocolate-- hands down. I also enjoy Italian food and “comfort food.”

What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: On a typical day off, I enjoy taking time to enjoy the day with my children while doing both the fun and the mundane. Making the mundane things fun is my goal! Relaxing in a hot bath while reading a good book is my favorite way to decompress at the end of the day.

Who lives in your house?: I live with my supportive, helpful and hilarious husband. We have two incredibly fun and active little boys, ages 7 and 3.
