Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have always worked in jobs that focused on people whether it was hiring, training, counseling or caring for their personal needs. I was a certified doula and childbirth educator with eight years of experience before deciding to train and certify with Pro Doula, and I am also a certified lactation counselor. After practicing as a solo doula for six years I opened a doula agency in 2014. Buddha Belly Birth Services has now grown into a team of ten doulas. We provide labor support, postpartum support, childbirth classes, hypno-birthing classes, placenta encapsulation, lactation support and belly-casting. I am also the President of the Tampa Bay Birth Network and have held this position for the past five years, bringing educational programs, support resources and events to our community.
What led you to become a Doula?: I was one of the first women in my circle of friends to have a baby. I took a very thorough childbirth classes and was blown away by all of the information that nobody seemed to know about pregnancy and birth. I became the go-to person for advice, support and information. As a young girl I also witnessed my own sister being born and this joyous memory stayed with me. Becoming a doula was a perfect choice for me and it has always come naturally.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I have been told that I have a good ability to connect with people on a personal level with compassion and provide support, and that I’m an optimist. Despite tough times in my life Ive always pushed on and turned things around.
