Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: Aside from being a birth worker, I am also a counsellor. My education and experience as a counsellor has been an asset to my work as a doula - giving me a good understanding of maternal mental health concerns, but also an ability to listen well as clients share their fears, hopes, disappointments, and joys. Fear and anxiety are part of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum for many people. My counselling skills and training has given me the tools to be able to share with doula clients to help them work through their anxieties.
What led you to become a Doula?: I came to birth work after having my own babies. Prior to that, I didn’t even know what a doula was but had always had a keen interest in birth. I can remember watching “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” when I was young and longing to one day be helping women as they birth their babies. Through my own encounters with birth, a passion for supporting and educating women through their pregnancy, birth, and baby experiences was kindled in me.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
People often say that I am kind, thoughtful, caring, and a good listener. They also note that I am organized, thorough, and show great attention to detail.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: There are so many good resources, it’s hard to narrow it down to just a few favourites! The book I most often recommend to clients is “The Birth Partner” by Penny Simkin. My favourite online birth resource is: Evidence Based Birth My favourite informative and fun podcasts are: “The Birth Kweens” and “Birthful”.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I think pregnant bellies are amazing and beautiful, but aside from admiring her belly, my first thoughts would generally be to wonder how she’s feeling, physically and emotionally. When I see someone with a brand new baby, I wonder how they are adjusting to the enormous life change they’ve just gone through and whether they are getting the support that they need during this challenging season in their life.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: As a birth worker, I think the best gift I can give to new parents is compassionate, unconditional support. I think that when people are supported in their decisions, they become more confident in their ability to make good choices for their life and family.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: My favourite movies of all time is “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken”
What is your favorite place to vacation?: My family has a cottage on a lake. That will forever be my favourite place on the earth.
What is your favorite food?: Scallops. Fresh veggies from the garden in the summer. Ice cream.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: With my family... I love the lazy, stay in your pjs until lunch, sit together on the couch and snuggle up to read stories kind of mornings. Follow that up with a fun family outing in the afternoon and a date night with my husband in the evening and I’ve just had a perfect day off.
Who lives in your house?: Myself, my amazing husband, our two beautiful children, and our super snuggly cat and dog.
