Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have worked as a doula for 4 years and throughout that time I have tirelessly worked to educate and grow my skill set. I work to create professional relationships with my clients as well as care providers. Indianapolis Doulas works hard to create a team approach in all that we do.
What led you to become a Doula?: I have always wanted to support women. When I had my first baby and learned first hand how hard it all is and received tons of opinions of what was best for me and I my baby I knew that wasn’t right. I knew what I needed was the space to make my own choices for myself and my family . When I learned that I could have a job helping to create that environment for other women I was sold!
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
“Colleen was helpful and informative even before we were sure we wanted to hire a doula. We hired her very late in the third trimester and she was a wealth of resources as we made difficult decisions (I was a VBAC candidate who went 42 weeks.) Colleen was a tremendous emotional support from the instant she was involved in our pregnancy. When I finally chose a C-section, Colleen helped ensure it was still as natural as I wanted it to be—she took pictures with my phone so my husband could focus on the birth and she worked with him to help support my baby and get him latched on in the OR. I can’t say enough good things about Colleen. If I was going to have another baby, I would want her on my team again.”
“She(Colleen) has been an invaluable resource and immense help during the last six months. As self-employed first time parents to a very spirited baby girl, we were somewhat unprepared to balance work and parenting. Work life balance seems to be a challenge for many parents regardless of baby’s nature but it was particularly overwhelming for us with high needs all around. Colleen has offered unbiased support and advice only when solicited. We have learned that qualified postpartum care is just as important to mental and physical health as good prenatal care. Leave a few of the baby gadgets off the registry and add Colleen! “
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: My best resource is myself. I see a big part of my job as a doula is building relationships. I have spent time and lots of effort building relationships within our community to grow a network. I love sharing that hard work and network with my clients.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: That she has just begun a crazy and special journey. A journey that will change her to the absolute core of her being and I hope she is surrounded with unbiased no strings attached support.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: The best gift I can give a mom is my unwavering support. I can’t give her a specific outcome, but I can be a shoulder to cry on and to tell her her feelings are valid. What she is experiencing and how she feels about it are valid and ok. Letting her know whatever path she chooses I will be by her side supporting her the whole way.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: I love movies and shows so this is hard! Favorite movie of all time is Dirty Dancing and probably Finding Nemo. Favorite shows are Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Outlander, Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Parks and Rec, The Office, and New Girl.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: All the places. I’ve been pretty much nowhere and I want to go everywhere.
What is your favorite food?: Ice Cream and pickles, not at the same time.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Playing outside with my men
Who lives in your house?: Me, my husband and best friend Adam, Brady(6), Finn (2), our stinky dog Kali, and our huge cat our at the time 3 year old named Bali Bali.
