Meet Your ProDoula

Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I am currently an early childhood educator and prior to my current job, I worked for three years as a preschool teacher. My time working with children has built my passion for their safety, growth, and well-being. I became passionate while working with families and working on communication and problem-solving with various struggles they would endure. As soon as I heard about what a doula is and what they can do, I immediately became intrigued!

What led you to become a Doula?: During my pregnancy, I heard about birth doulas, but my husband and I didn't think we would be able to afford one. Luckily for me, I had an amazing pregnancy and I loved doing all the research, checking out library books, reading up on motherhood blogs, etc. I stumbled across a local doula agency that was looking to expand their business by hiring doulas so I jumped on the opportunity. I am starting with postpartum and infant care work since my schedule is difficult to work around with my almost one-year-old daughter, but eventually, I would love to work with birth clients as well!

What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:

People would say that I am outgoing, caring, helpful, fun, and loving.

What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: When I was pregnant, I loved The Bump app for my phone to keep me in the loop of how many weeks along I am and what to expect during those weeks. After baby came, I checked out The Wonder Weeks book which gave me knowledge on fussy times baby could be going through developmentally and what we could do to help her overcome and shine through those "leaps." I also loved watching YouTube videos to hear other mother's perspectives on issues which made me feel I wasn't alone.

What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: When I come across someone who's pregnant or has a baby, I almost always think about what they must be feeling. I think about how overwhelmed they must be and wonder if they are feeling okay. I just think back to how I felt as a brand new mom, even though I did so much research and prep, I still had no idea what was in store, so I take my experience and think about that pregnant person or new family.

What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Non-judgmental support. I can be there for them as someone who will listen to them, care for them hands on in their home, help them find resources if needed, give them a break and help with their baby...whatever that particular family needs.

What is your favorite TV show or movie?: The Golden Girls

What is your favorite place to vacation?: Miami

What is your favorite food?: I don't have a favorite. Put anything in front of me when I'm hungry.

What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I love checking out new restaurants, shops, and coffee shops to have an iced chai. I also am a sucker for my city's juicery/smoothie places. 🙂 With my baby girl in tow, of course!

Who lives in your house?: Myself, my husband, and our daughter.
