Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: My professional background lies in Medical Software and most recently Financial Counseling. Although both challenging and rewarding, my heart never felt truly fulfilled. I have always had a passion for babies. I am very comfortable around newborns and have been babysitting since I was 12 years old. When my firstborn son came along, it was such a beautiful and traumatic time. He was an emergency C-Section which was not part of my birthing plan. However, the joy I felt when first meeting his little face was something I'll never forget. Then when my daughter came along she had acid reflux and became colicky. Learning baby massage techniques helped reduce her symptoms before finding the right prescription formula. I feel that I can be a source of comfort and compassion for new parents because of my own experiences, struggles and comfort level with newborns. Motherhood changed me in ways I did not expect so I can help parents navigate this new adventure.
What led you to become a Doula?: In my role as a Financial Counselor, I met many families with newborns. These babies would always make my day brighter! If I could only work with babies all day? I decided to take a leap of faith and left my job to become a Doula. I want to love what I do and working with babies will fill my heart while helping new parents adapt to this new life transition. I love meeting new people and helping them overcome obstacles in a compassionate manner. I loved being pregnant and the nature of birth is so intriguing.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I’ve been told that I am easy to talk to and compassionate. I have empathy and can easily relate to others. I am flexible and try to see the bright side and humor in every situation. Managers have described me as dependable, kind and trustworthy.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I loved the book "What to Expect when Expecting". It's a great start for new parents. I also like Mama Natural and Baby Center, both on line resources. 1-2-3 Magic Parenting books were a great resource for me as well.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: My own pregnancy and children come to mind. It makes me think how precious life is and how fast these babies grow up. I want to stop them and say "take it all in, absorb every moment because before you know it this baby will be 13 and 14 years old". If I see a baby crying in the store, I want to help them. I want to hold their baby and say, it's ok go finish your shopping I'll be right here with your baby!
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: I can give them the gift of confidence and reassurance that having a baby is a life changing and help them feel less isolated. I can help them understand that all these new feelings and experiences are normal. I can give them the gift of compassionate care and truly listen to their needs to help them find solutions. I can be their sounding board and friend.
