Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: With a passion for maternal health and experience in teaching and childcare, plus three children of my own, I feel that I am well equipped to be YOUR doula.
What led you to become a Doula?: While most of my professional experience has always been in theatre, my whole life I have been interested in birth. In recent years, my desire to find a way to support women and families in a more meaningful way has grown, leading me on a journey to see where that type of career could take me. When I decided to become a doula, it was because it felt like the best fit for my family as a new career, one at which supporting and caring for families through birth and parenthood were at the forefront.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: A quick go-to for me was always What to Expect... I like that it gives an overview of baby's development and changes in your body. Plus, who doesn't like a good fruit comparison!? For women interested in unmedicated birth, anything by Ina May Gaskin is particularly powerful. For all moms, I like Birthing From Within. Its approach provides a creative way to mentally prepare for birth and process your experiences postpartum. Finally, of the various parenting books I've read, The Danish Way is my favorite because I keep referring back to it for my own family. I particularly appreciate its advice for how to stay calm and understand your child's behavior from a developmental standpoint. It really puts the ups and downs of parenting into perspective in an applicable and doable way.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: She must tired! How can I help?
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: All moms deserve to feel supported without judgment. I want every mom to talk walk away from her experience at peace with the choices she made and comforted by the knowledge that her choices were respected and listened to.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: As far as TV is concerned, I love The Waltons, Sex and the City, and Downton Abbey. I do love comedic films, but find myself most drawn to period style dramas. Anything British is usually a win.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: A dream trip of my husband and I was to stay at the Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado in San Diego. It was amazing and we loved our weekend getaway. When my kids are a little older, I dream of taking them to Scotland share with them the many memories I made while living there as a military child.
What is your favorite food?: Most things smothered with cheese.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: We live in rural Arizona, so I love spending time in Tucson and catching some theatre. When I get spare time in town, there is a lovely locally owned bakery with the best pastries. I usually choose to go there or to a restaurant with a book or a magazine and soak in some much needed self-care.
Who lives in your house?: At our house it is my husband and me, our three beautiful children (two sons and a daughter), and two dogs.
