Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have a teaching degree in special education. My experiences working with a diverse community of people have helped me develop strong communication skills and a deep desire to effectively meet the needs of the people I am working with.
What led you to become a Doula?: I became interested in birth work after the birth of my second daughter. Through research about birth I realized how different my birth experiences could have been had I had access to information and the support of a doula. As I learned more about the role of a doula I knew that it was a service that I could provide to women in my community.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
“Our very first meeting, she was kind, warm and friendly, but professional. I felt assured she was highly capable and knowledgeable, and simultaneously felt very comfortable knowing she would be an integral part of one of the most intimate moments in life.” “She was extremely calm and has a very warm personality”
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin,Ina May's Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin, The Happiest Baby on the Block by Harvey Karp
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I am excited for the expecting couple or new parents because I know the journey of raising children is life changing. The ups and downs of parenting stretch a person to become so much more than they realized they could be. I am so thankful that I get to be with people as they transition to being parents.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: The best gift I could give a new mother would be the knowledge that she is exactly what her baby needs.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: My favorite movie is The Princess Bride
What is your favorite place to vacation?: I love camping with my family. It doesn't matter if we are at a local campground or a national park.
What is your favorite food?: Cheese and/or cake, but not cheesecake.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I like to go out for a delicious brunch and then spend the rest of the day at a friend's house drinking coffee and catching up on each others lives.
Who lives in your house?: I share my home with my husband, my four daughters, two cats and a dog.
