Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I used to work as a dramatherapist and gave social skills and comunicationstrainings. I also was a seksual educations teacher in a school for teenagers with behavioral problems. I also became a prenatal yoga instructor in 2013.
What led you to become a Doula?: My reasons for becoming a birthdoula in 2010 was twofold. The idea of supporting parents started when I was working with teenagers and their parents as a dramatherapist. Reading and hearing about the troubles the parents have had in the early years and mothers going through feeling isolated or depressed and lacking in support. Then came the moment I became a mother myself and the days after birth I read an article on birthdoulas. And besides thinking 'I could really have used one of those' I also recognized myself in that. Thinking providing support in such a remarkable way would really benefit the birthing environment and gives a better change of a positive start as a new parent and feeling more confident. After a few years of supporting parents throughout pregnancy and birth I got text and phone calls of mothers finding it hard to cope with it all. They were unprepared for the change in their life and were struggling with their relationship or getting back to work or just feeling lonely and finding it hard. So adding postnatal and infant care work to my existing doula business just makes sense.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
One of my clients told me she felt so supported without any bias from me that she was able to share her secret wish to just birth at home, on her own, in the dark, like an animal. She still wanted my support and the midwife but did indeed get her desired home birth and trusted she could do it.
My last postnatal client told me I’m like a rock, just that she knows I’m there and she can count on me, but she didn’t notice me until she needed a place to sit (or was finally invited to sit and rest).
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I love to help clients find resources that match their wishes. For general really good unbiased information I like the birth course in Delft and Rotterdam provided by the Birth in Holland team and the parenting courses they teach.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: Yeah good for you, hope you're doing well and get lots of love and support.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: I sure wish I could gift confidence, but since that it something they need to build I'd say support in whatever form she needs. To tell her she's doing well and help raise her self esteem as a mother, to take the baby for a little while so she can sleep, to do the dishes etc.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: The Big Bang Theory
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Italy
What is your favorite food?: I love most things spicy like Indian or Thai but also most pastas and pizzas
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: At the beach with my three children, but also love going bowling or any other fun family outing
Who lives in your house?: I live with my husband, my two boys of 11 and 9 and my 4 year old girl and two cats.
