Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: Before I discovered ProDoula I initially trained through DONA International in 2014. In 2015 I also trained as a Hypnodoula through Hypnobabies to better serve the large number of women in my area looking to use that birthing method. Since then I've gained great experience with teen moms, home birth, hospital birth, and hypnosis, as well as supporting clients experiencing postpartum depression.
What led you to become a Doula?: When I was four years old my mom's La Leche League group all got together to watch our birth videos, and that was my hasty introduction to the birth world. When I turned 17 I decided that supporting women in some way was my calling, and after speaking to both midwives and doulas, I decided that emotional, and not medical support, was what I needed to be doing.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
A client I worked with who developed PPD sent me a beautiful handwritten letter with the following: “You have such a calming presence, and it was a blessing finding you as a doula. Thank you for helping me feel empowered and confident enough to ask for what I wanted! You definitely empowered me AND R (her husband), and I think that is truly amazing. Also, thank you so
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: It depends on the client, but I have a great collection of books I'll recommend from and online resources like Science and Sensibility. I also love online communities like Postpartum Progress and local support groups like La Leche League.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: She usually looks tired! Modern motherhood can be hard and isolating and I love being able to offer some much-needed support.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: I think the most important thing I've offered mothers after their births is a safe space to voice their real emotions about their births and experiences with motherhood. I'm there to listen without judgement and let them say the things they can't tell anyone else, and help them find the resources and support they need to feel confident and secure.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: I could watch Freaks and Geeks on a loop for the rest of my life and never get tired of it. I love watching the unexpected bonds forming between entirely different people.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Coastal Oregon! My fiancee and I can't wait to move to the Pacific Northwest someday. Having grown up in the Arizona desert, the lush greenery is so energizing and simultaneously relaxing.
What is your favorite food?: I don't think I have a favorite food, but I could drink green tea matcha lattes all day long.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I love to color! I'll go to my favorite local coffee shop and people watch and color my most recent book- I'm not a good artist, but coloring makes me feel like I can still create something beautiful without the pressure to do it all on my own.
Who lives in your house?: My little cat, Mitzi- she showed up on my back porch one day and never left. Some days it feels like it's her house and I'm just taking up her space!
