Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: 10+ years in nanny and childcare work, Bachelors in Biology.
What led you to become a Doula?: I saw my good friend give birth when I was 19 years old and was also taking a sex and gender course in college. In class I was introduced to birth work via The Business of Being Born and from there I did my own research on the birth field and found my way to doula work.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I’ve been told that I’m reliable, punctual, trustworthy, responsible, enthusiastic, passionate.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I love to find books and websites specific to each pregnant person or parent. My go to website for the Seattle area is Parent Map both for pregnant persons and parents because they have great articles on HCPs, indoor and outdoor play areas, review of products etc. I also really like the What to Expect series as a general resource for pregnant persons. I'll also suggest Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and Penny Simkin's The Birth Partner. I also really like the book the Whole Brained Child.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I wonder how she's doing? I wonder does she have adequate help at home? Did/does she have a doula for her birth? How was her pregnancy? Did she get the birth experience they wanted? How can I help her if she does initiate a conversation with me (for instance if she notices my doula shirt)?
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Your time, non-judgemental support understanding, and a listening ear. Birth is such an intimate and individual experience and to be invited to a birth or help someone soon after birth is really a blessing. I lot of times new moms just need someone they can feel comfortable enough to share their thoughts, fears, and feelings about birth and parenting.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Favorite TV show right now is the OA. Favorite of all time is The X Files.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: In the mountains
What is your favorite food?: Right now? Southern comfort food - sausage and gravy biscuits, vegetable soup and dumplings, mashed potatoes etc. (pregnancy craving)
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Hiking, camping, hanging our with my husband and our pets, catching up with friends.
Who lives in your house?: My husband and our pets, soon to be one more person (little boy) in May, Minnie (female Bishon mix), Onyx (black male cat), WuTang (male ferret)
