Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I am a mom, and a pre-certified Labor and Postpartum and Infant Care Doula through ProDoula. The education I received through my trainings is second to none and the wealth of knowledge available in this community is astounding. I have a background in Sociology and volunteer work in early childhood education with at-risk youth. There have been many events in my life leading to this career and all have one thing in common: compassion. Birth work can mean many things, and a large part of it is supporting a family's emotional health. This is something I have done my entire life.
What led you to become a Doula?: I had a beautiful birth experience where I felt loved and supported. I like to think that the birth of my son opened my eyes to this new passion I needed to explore. As I dove deeper into the research, a spark ignited and I knew this was the path I needed to travel.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
My friends affectionately tease me with the nickname “mom”. I take that as a very positive comment.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: The Informed Parent. I cannot recommend this book enough!
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I'd say I have more feelings than thoughts when I see a pregnant woman or new parents. My heart feels fuller and I feel excited for them and an instant need to connect with them. I love to talk to pregnant women and new parents and ask them all about how they are feeling.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Confidence and/or relief. There is so much information out there and it becomes extremely overwhelming to the point where as a new parent you are constantly asking yourself "is this ok?!". Sometimes the greatest thing in the world is to hear that you are doing a great job, and that you're a rockstar parent! It's reassuring and calming.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Movies - Moulin Rouge, Dumb and Dumber, Aladdin, and Emperor's New Groove.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Anywhere with my husband. Exploring new things together is my favorite thing.
What is your favorite food?: I love all the food. Maybe pizza? I can't choose one, I'd feel bad for whatever food is left out.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Spending time with my family. I don't really care what we're doing, as long as we're together, I'm happy.
Who lives in your house?: I live with my husband, our son, and my nephew. I also have a dog and two cats! If it were up to me, we'd also have a horse, but my husband keeps reminding me that we rent an apartment in the city.
