Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: Labor doula for 5 years, postpartum doula for 3 years, encapsulator for 2 years
What led you to become a Doula?: My faith emphasizes serving others and I believe being a doula allows me to do this in conjunction with using my gifts of encouragement and mercy. I believe I have been called to doula work and I strive to do it with the highest sense of service and professionalism.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
Clients have described me as “a warm and calming presence”, “nonjudgmental”, and “kind and knowledgeable”.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I love The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin and refer it often to my clients. I also encourage new families to find support groups within the community.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: When I see a pregnant woman I am reminded of the 3 times I have been pregnant. I think about how she might be preparing for a new life and the questions she may have about the unknowns of pregnancy, labor, and taking care of a newborn. I also think of the new persona she is becoming as a mother. When I see a brand new mom I think about the support I hope she is getting to help her rest and recover and bond with her new baby.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: The best gift I can give a new mom is a listening ear! Sometimes moms just need to talk. The second best gift is confidence! She needs to know she is the authority on being the mother of her new baby. She knows her baby best!
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: My favorite movie is Life is Beautiful. My favorite TV show is Call the Midwife!
What is your favorite place to vacation?: I love the beaches on the coast of North Carolina!
What is your favorite food?: I love Tex Mex!
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I love to read and play on the Internet. If my day off is spent with family we love to play on our Wii and go on adventures together around town.
Who lives in your house?: Married to Casey for almost 15 years. John is 12, Gracie is 9, and Will is 6. Bear and Lady are our Boxer mixes. Percy and Nico are our guinea pigs. We also have a flock of chickens!
