Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have three children of my own and through each of those birth experiences (medicated and un-medicated natural birth), I learned something new about myself. I am a nurturing and encouraging person who understands the value of unconditionally receiving non-judgmental support during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum.
What led you to become a Doula?: I attended the birth of my nephew and offered support to my sister during the birth of her last child. It was an incredible honor. I became interested in ProDoula Labor Doula Certification immediately following.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
“You are supportive no matter what people’s plans or preferences are, but you love educating people about alternative methods if they want.” “I chose heather to be my doula because in the moments of giving birth to my child, I needed a strong voice to be there for what I wanted and needed. I knew Heather could be that for me.”
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Attachment Parenting International, Holistic Parenting Magazine, Kellymom.com, The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin, EvidenceBasedBirth.com
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: The first thing I think about is what supports she has in place to help her transition from pregnancy to motherhood. I wonder if she has any other children and how old they are. When I meet a new mom, I think about what she may have had to go through just to get out of bed this morning. I want to tell her that she's doing an awesome job and that she is so important.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: I can give her my undivided attention and support that she needs through her pregnancy and delivery. It's important to me that women have access to support, in any form, during this emotionally vulnerable time.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Parenthood TV Series
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Portland, Oregon
What is your favorite food?: Chips and Salsa
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I like to go on hikes with my baby-wearing 1 year old girl, my 6 year old boy, and my 3 year old boy. We like to discover and learn about nature together.
Who lives in your house?: Me and my three littles. We all have H names.
