Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have loved babies and children for as long as I can remember. I volunteered in my church nursery every chance I could get and babysat babies as soon as I was old enough. A biology major in college instilled a thorough understanding of the scientific process and dynamic nature of life. Motherhood and various birth and parenting experience further seared in me a desire to make things better for those around me. Birth became fascinating when it was happening to me, I was so shocked by what I learned that was different from what our culture shows!
What led you to become a Doula?: I wanted families to have the best possible experience. My experience with infertility and loss compelled me to be a person who lights the way for others. Before I understood what I was doing, I was already doula’ing others through pregnancy, birth, and beyond.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I show up and can be counted on. I’m compassionate, caring, cerebral, and intuitive.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: That’s hard - I don’t have favorites! I follow what the science says and that is ever changing, but more than that I trust in people’s innate ability to pick themselves up and move forward no matter the challenging circumstance and I’m there to facilitate them finding their own way. I like to blend a mix of approaches, so I may recommend Meditation Oasis to a client I think may benefit from that, or Cochrane reviews to clients who appreciate and need those studies.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: So many thoughts! I wonder if they’re prepared for what lies ahead, if they’re supported, if this little one was planned for or a surprise, if they know just how strong and resilient they are because they’re about to find out.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: That she is valuable and she matters and once her cup is full she can give to her family. It’s that whole oxygen mask thing.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: I’m a nerd with a penchant for reality shows. I love documentaries and things that make me feel, think, or are challenging the status-quo. Right now I’m obsessed with “Tony Robbins: I’m Not Your Guru,” “West World,” and “The Crown.” But when I want mindless entertainment, I love The Bachelor/Bachelorette/Bachelor In Paradise shows. Favorite move of all time is When Harry Met Sally. My husband got me hooked on Rick & Morty.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Disney World. It makes me happy to see others, especially children, happy and making memories they’ll cherish for the rest of their lives.
What is your favorite food?: Anything with spice and flavor. Or bread and butter! Chocolate? Wine, too. And tacos for days.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I love to clean but if I’m not doing that I love taking my family out for mini adventures and making memories.
Who lives in your house?: My husband and our four beautiful children, a Maine Coon cat, and a betta fish.
