Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: 4 years of working for an OB/GYN as a medical assistant.
What led you to become a Doula?: Most of my life I knew that I would work in the medical field, my family has a large background working in medicine and it was always something I loved very much. I was always the rock of support for my sisters in labor, and anything and everything birth related really interested me. After I started working for the OB I knew that working in women's health is exactly what I am meant to do. I thought that I would be a labor and delivery nurse, but soon realized that in reality, midwifery is what my ultimate goal is. Once I learned what a doula does and is, it just made sense. I had been one all along.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
Confident. Funny. Caring. Honest. & A bit of a bossy pants.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I absolutely love The Pregnancy Bible. My oldest sister gifted it to me when I was pregnant with my oldest son, and it's been passed around our family ever since. It is packed with great information from preconception to well after delivery. It's an older book, but I still loan my personal copy to clients when I can. It'll always be a favorite.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: Happy thoughts and thoughts of camaraderie. Happy thoughts because I see women who are experiencing a beautiful new journey in their life. Camaraderie because I know that same woman is going to be running on 2 hours of sleep, too much caffeine and will quite possibly be on the verge of burning something down next time I see her. We've all been there.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Attention and affirmation... Maybe a bottle of wine.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: FRIENDS!
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Colorado Springs
What is your favorite food?: Medium rare steak... Oh and Roadhouse rolls!
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Disney marathon!
Who lives in your house?: My husband, our two boys, Atka our husky, & Beans our pig. Yeah, it's a little crazy around here.
