Meet Your ProDoula

Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: Jacael Wallace started her journey as a postpartum doula because of her interest and love for pregnancy, babies, and helping others. She attended Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Family Consumer Sciences and a Bachelor of Art in French. During her studies, she concentrated on Human Development and Family Sciences, understanding, and learning how to promote healthy families, individuals, and communities. Jacael has many years of experience working with families and their children as a nanny, childcare assistant, and babysitter. So, after graduating, Jacael knew that she wanted to work with families and babies, so it was exciting when she learned about postpartum doulas. She is excited to help families feel confident and empowered during such a special but sometimes hard time in their lives.

What led you to become a Doula?: During my senior year at Bridgewater College, I continuously thought about what I would do after graduation. I knew that I wanted to either work with children, parents, or families. I constantly researched jobs where I would be doing something that I loved and enjoyed. One day while I was searching I came across a career that required a doula certification. So, I did further research on doulas and the different types that existed. After understanding the many ways in which doulas assist mothers and their families, I wanted to be a postpartum doula. I could work with children, parents, and families all in one. Being a postpartum doula allows me to support mothers in a time where a lot of family members and friends are primarily focused on the baby, not the mother's recovery after birth. Providing emotional and physical support while also helping with infant care, breastfeeding support, meal preparation, sibling care, etc. It joys my heart to know that I can be there for someone during one of the most important times in their lives. Be a shoulder to lean on while also having the resources necessary to help with tasks that may not be in my scope of practice. My main goal is to help families feel confident and empowered in welcoming their new baby into their family!

What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:

We used J. Olia Doula Services right after the birth of our baby boy. Jacael was instrumental in our transition from hospital to home. She arrived at our home soon after we did and helped make sure we were fully prepared and everything was set up right for our little one. For the first few days, she helped us adjust to life with a newborn and showed us some good tips that have helped us along with this process. We highly recommend her services to anyone needing a postpartum doula!
