Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: My service background is in education. During the pregnancy of my first child I was introduced to careers that support birthing women. My passion for teaching science was easily swayed into a passion for birth education. Clients are able to benefit from my years of education and my knowledge of birth support through the extensive trainings provided by ProDoula. The experiences gleaned from working with clients has only enhanced my abilities to attune to their needs and better serve future clients.
What led you to become a Doula?: Throughout my pregnancy and birth I encountered many moms and families who needed support. Many were searching for support without resources. After an amazing pregnancy and birthing experience I was invited to a Prodoula Workshop by my doula. The workshop taught me how to support women and families during these special times in life.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
Others would say that I am a reliable task oriented person. I am there when you need me. They would say that I have the ability to understand the situation from other viewpoints allowing me to provide non judgmental support.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Some of the most helpful resources that I have found are online groups that include families from all over the globe. These types of groups allow a wide spectrum of information. My favorite app to use for a parenting “heads up” is Wonder Weeks. It allows me to understand the stages of cognitive development that my child is going through.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: EXCITEMENT! I’m so excited to hear their birth story and how they are adjusting to life as a new mom. Every birthing experience is so unique; no two stories are ever alike!
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: An ear and an open heart are the two most valuable gifts that I can give to a new mom. An ear to listen to her needs, emotions, desires as a new mom. And an open heart to support her in the way in which she needs.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: I am a Survivor nut. I’m drawn to the competitions. I think that they would be so fun to do/play!
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Australia. After serving there for a month with International Student Volunteers, I feel in love. I cannot wait to take my family there someday.
What is your favorite food?: Homemade chocolate chip cookies.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Outdoors on a bike or spending downtime with my family.
Who lives in your house?: My husband Nick, my son Maximus, our cat Spooki, and myself.
