Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I am a licensed practical nurse with a surgical background. I worked both pre-op and post-op patients. I have performed clinical placements on both maternity and pediatric floors. I am a mother to a 2 year old boy and have a passion for working with both pregnant woman and newborn babies. I also have volunteered as a camp counsellor and youth group leader for young teens. While attending nursing school I worked in home care for adults with developmental disabilities. I served a work mission in Guatemala in 2008 which included delivering supplies to the maternity ward of the hospital for the impoverished.
What led you to become a Doula?: I have always loved babies and children. My own labor , delivery and postpartum period lead me wishing I had invested in a doula. My little brother died tragically in 2015 which lead to me to want to work in a field that would allow me to a part of new life rather than a lot of death…which I dealt with a lot in the hospital.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
That I am charismatic, have a calming presence, am non judgemental and can be relied upon. I work hard and learn fast.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I love to look to other mothers who offer experience. I am very much an “I” in this respect as I love to connect with others who have had similar experiences. I also love DR. Sears. I still have my maternity nursing text book from nursing school which I also look at. For my own postpartum struggles, “Happiest Baby on the block” was a life saver.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: Excitement for new life !
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Non-judgmental support, a listening ear …and a nap.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: How to get away with murder. The suspenseful endings keep me hooked. I also recently fell in love with “Life in Pieces” …it’s hysterically funny.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: We love to take road trips to camp. We frequent Kalispell, MT and Whitefish but love new places. This year we were fortunate enough to road trip to Seattle.
What is your favorite food?: Is coffee a food? I love food so I can’t really narrow it down but I love fresh fruit, garden vegetables and a good steak.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Relaxing with my family, working out at the gym, reading a good book and enjoying the outdoors. I also love to hike.
Who lives in your house?: My husband, two year old son Kaidyn, myself and two dogs, Chico and Shia.
