Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: In college, as part of my psychology degree, I completed research on what influences women’s attitudes towards childbirth. During that time, I also interned with a midwife in a community hospital as well as a social worker, providing support for medically-underserved expectant and new mothers during home and office visits. This was great practice for providing emotional and educational support, which are integral to doula work. I also work as a professional photographer, focusing on maternity, birth, and families. I love working with families throughout the pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period. I’ve learned how to handle a mom’s needs, toddlers running around, and other stuff going on in the background, all while getting the job done taking a beautiful photograph. Every family is different and every photoshoot is different, but each time I’m so happy to spend time with a family and capture beautiful memories.
What led you to become a Doula?: I grew up learning about birth early on from my mom, who is a lactation consultant and a former childbirth educator. As a young child, I used to sit in on the childbirth classes she taught in our basement, watching the women practice relaxation techniques in the dimly lit room, and hear my mom talk about the different stages of pregnancy and labor. I’d also tag along to her La Leche League meetings and listen to the women share stories & years of experience with one another, drawn to this sisterhood of support.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
Friends have told me that I’m a good listener, and that they can count on me to say the right thing when they’re in a time of need.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Kellymom.com, Evidence Based Birth, and Dr. James McKenna’s research on infant sleep. I also love reaching out to my local network of birth professionals- there’s so much knowledge to be shared.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I get excited about the journey they’re on, and I’m in awe of just how much strength that journey takes!
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Compassion, a listening ear, and a safe place to land.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Bend It Like Beckham is an old favorite.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: The Pacific Northwest. For our honeymoon, my wife and I spent time in Portland, the Oregon coast, and Seattle. The gorgeous landscape and the food culture there was just the best. We ate lots of donuts, biscuits, and coffee!
What is your favorite food?: I love Thai food and Indian food!
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I like to catch up on design blogs while cozied up on the couch. I also love reading memoirs- I just can’t get enough.
