Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I'm a mum of 3 kids. I studied midwifery and followed succesfully a doula certification training in the Netherlands (with JJ Doula). Since March 2017 I'm a certified Labour Doula in the Netherlands and a member of the Dutch Association of Doula's. I'm starting a cross certification procedure of Prodoula in April 2018. I followed the postpartum & infant care training in January 2018 and I am excited to start!
What led you to become a Doula?: Before becoming a doula I studied Chemistry and worked for 17 years on environmental quality topics. When I turned 40 I made a big career decision and started with my midwifery studies. During this time, I realized that I wanted to be there as a support person for the whole pregnancy and not just the birth. I want to build relationships with my clients and to ensure that they are fully prepared for the arrival of their new born. I started my training as a doula and have found my niche. It's the most rewarding job i have had (besides being a mum).
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
The reviews on my website, made by clients, say: “I experienced doula Joyce as a professional, caring and warm person.” “Also besides the birth she is of great value.” “With her midwifery knowledge and her doula skills she really offers an unique package.”
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I read a lot of material, looking for information on www.RIVM.nl for health issues, www.voedingscentrum.nl for nutritions and reading books for parents, like "The Danish Way of Parenting”. I also attend a lot of conferences, think tanks, trainings and gatherings. On my facebook webpage (Doula Joyce) I share regularly information on pregnancy and parenting.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: Ahhhh, it makes me smile. I really hope they have a wonderful time. Having a baby is like falling in love. I wish every woman a nice pregnancy, a great birth and a smooth postpartum period. And if I can help with that, that makes me happy too.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Strength, knowing that she is a mum and can handle the things in her way with the knowledge that she knows her baby the best.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: LOL, no time for TV
What is your favorite place to vacation?: All places! I love to travel! That said, I love visiting family in Australia.
What is your favorite food?: Coffee
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Going to the beach with my family and having dinner while the sun is going down in the water. Or, when we have more days of, going to Euro Disney with my kids; I love roller coasters!
Who lives in your house?: During the week, I live with my son Sirik, daughter Ariena and my husband Taco. Taco is a normal typical Dutch name, but in every other country a tasteful diner! I heard the joke that my name must be enchilada several times :D ! My oldest son Tormo studies in Amsterdam and is only home on the weekends.
