Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I am the oldest child in both my immediate and extended family, so nurturing has always been in my nature. I helped raise my sister, who is 9 years younger than me and was born at 29 weeks. I spent many years in high school and college working with children of all ages as a nanny and babysitter. I have also spent over 100 hours shadowing a pediatrician.
What led you to become a Doula?: My ultimate goal is to become a pediatrician. I hope to combine holistic health practices and modern medicine to help children reach their maximum potentials so they can succeed in adulthood. A huge part of child development is dependent on the environment they are exposed to; and by working as a postpartum and infant care doula, I hope to provide the support families need to create what they believe is a nurturing environment for their child. I think working with families in this capacity before starting my medical school journey will make me a better healthcare provider in the future.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
People have told me that I’m very driven and passionate. I’ve also been told I’m good with children and very patient. I’ve had a yoga student tell me that I made her feel safe and confident in her abilities, and I hope I can continue being able to hold that type of space for my clients.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Family and friends who have children. Experienced colleagues I have met through ProDoula. My yoga teacher mentors who specialize in prenatal/postpartum yoga and yoga therapy. My medical mentor, Dr. Wisdeen Wu, DO. I have also recently discovered Evidence Based Birth. I'm a bit of a nerd and read the articles from the journal Pediatrics when I have time.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I admire that she's decided to take the next step in motherhood and am excited to see where her journey takes her. I also hope that she's getting enough rest and support.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Support, both physically and emotionally, so that she can create the nurturing environment she wants for her new baby and take care of herself as she heals.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Game of Thrones. Hands down. Winter is here, guys
What is your favorite place to vacation?: I don't get to vacation very much. But I grew up on an island so beaches with blue water and soft sand have always reminded me of home.
What is your favorite food?: I love food and my preference changes a lot so it's hard for me to pick. Currently, I would say I really appreciate some good al pastor.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Start off with a complete breakfast, followed by some gentle yoga. Then I usually clean my room up, light a candle, make some tea, and catch up on my shows in bed.
Who lives in your house?: My parents, my younger brother and sister, my cousin, and my 14-year-old shih tzu named Koi.
