Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: As a certified doula and childbirth educator working since 2011, I have served many families. My background in behavioral psychology has helped me connect with families on a deeper level, understanding how to best meet their individual needs and facilitating the birth team working together toward my clients’ goals. Additionally, as a founding member of the Peoria IL chapter of ICAN, I have been a part of many women’s journeys through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum and have had the honor of helping them find resources and build support networks along the way. I became interested in encapsulating placentas when I tried it myself with my second baby and was so blown away by the difference it made! I would feel that lump in my throat like I was about to cry over nothing, and I’d take a placenta capsule, and I’d feel like ME again. I want that for my clients.
What led you to become a Doula?: I have always been passionate about helping women. I was previously a manager at an all-women’s fitness facility, but fitness was not exactly a passion of mine. When I became pregnant with my first child and realized how important support in childbirth is, I knew that I had found my calling.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
Trustworthy, helpful, ability to attune to the needs of others, great listener, problem-solver, Queen of finding resources.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Our Facebook Groups! Heartland Expectant Parents, Heartland Parenting, Heartland Bottle Feeding Support, and Heartland Working Moms are great places to meet other people who have been through or are currently experiencing all the things you have questions about, along with the expertise of our professional and supportive doulas. Outside of our groups, I like the Wonder weeks app, your _ year old, and our incredible local community of supportive groups and professionals.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I always hope that she is feeling confident and supported, free to make the decisions that are right for her and her new family, without judgment and unsolicited advice from others.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: The gift of unwaivering support and trust in her ability to blaze her own trail as a parent.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: I typically watch TV to turn off and decompress, so I love comedies! Billy Madison and Waiting are two of my favorite movies, and I love to watch The League.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: I love the unique history packed into the tiny island of Key West, coupled with a trip to Little Palm Island.
What is your favorite food?: Tacos! Taco Bell if I feel like a calorie splurge.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I love to take my kids on a new adventure, whether it’s to see the new museum exhibit, go on a hike, or share my love of ice skating with them.
Who lives in your house?: I share a home with my husband Nick, three children, and two rescued pit bulls. If we had the yard for it, I’d probably fill our home with rescued animals!
