Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: After the birth of my second son I felt sort of alone on my own island. I strived for a community where other moms could get together and learn from each other. I started a Facebook group called Mid Kansas Mommies in the summer of 2012. Although we have well over 1,000 members, it is such a close community! I’m always surrounding myself with inspiring women and young moms who simply want to do what is best for their family and their children, whatever that looks like to them.
What led you to become a Doula?: It sounds cliche, but it was my own births that lead me to want to work with birthing women and new families. Learning about birth and all of the many choices women have became a passion of mine after having my second child. I love teaching women about birth and helping them learn and grow as mothers.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I love when people see that I have a drive to succeed in life. I’m constantly moving up and when I get to the top I move onto the next great thing. Move up or move on is my motto!
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Probably my most favorite is the group of moms in Mid Kansas Mommies on Facebook. I’ve never met a better group of insightful, kind and helpful moms.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I want to tell her that she’s doing an incredible job and to not ever feel bad for asking for help. She’s beautiful and wonderful and strong.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: I want all of the new moms that I work with to leave the experience knowing that they are powerful, strong and capable. Being a mom can be hard somedays, but if she can wake up in the morning feeling powerful then I’ve done my job.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: I love watching new-to-me episodes of Hart of Dixie and I’m just discovering the world of Gilmore Girls on Netflix.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Growing up in Kansas I always dreamt of visiting the mountains again. My heart lives on a snow-capped mountaintop.
What is your favorite food?: I LOVE home cooked comfort food. Biscuits and gravy, beef and noodles, ham and potatoes. If it is a warm meal with family around the table, I am there!
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Spending time outside with my amazing kids. I dream of being crafty or spending the day cooking, but that just never works out. Maybe someday!
Who lives in your house?: I live with my high school sweetheart husband, 3 inspiring children and 2 lazy dogs.
