Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have a background in international studies and the legal field, which doesn’t sound related to birth work at all. But my international studies experience helped to shape my open mind and non-judgmental attitude. My legal experience gave me wonderful critical thinking and multi-tasking skills. With every family I support, I bring with me an open mind and open heart. I also put those multi-tasking skills to use every day, as I prep healthy meals, throw in a load of laundry, and help with breastfeeding support, all while giving new parents a listening ear.
What led you to become a Doula?: Seeing women in my community continuously experience the same lonely and overwhelmed postpartum period that I experienced many years ago convinced me that something needed to change. The desire to create a healthy, supported, and enjoyable postpartum period for all families led me down the path to becoming a postpartum doula and postpartum placenta specialist.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
Families I’ve worked with describe me as calming, confident, and a good-listener. I have also been told that I have the ability to anticipate other’s needs and do things for them before they even need to ask.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: For any mom planning to breastfeed, I always recommend the book Breastfeeding Made Simple by Kendall-Tackett and Mohrbacher. Dr. Sears’s Baby Book is another comprehensive and informative resource for new parents. But with any resource, I always tell parents to read with an open mind and do what feels best for their family. No baby is going to be exactly like a book.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: Excitement. Whether this woman is pregnant with her first or last child, every child born is a new opportunity and it is so exciting to imagine what this new little person will bring to the world.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Non-judgmental support is the best gift a new mom can have. Mothers need to feel supported and secure as they navigate their new role as mom. I’m there to build their confidence and cheer them on, no matter what.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Star Wars (Episodes 4-7). My kids find it super annoying when I speak along with the characters when we watch the movies.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: The North Carolina Outer Banks, especially Ocracoke.
What is your favorite food?: Sushi
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I recently learned to ice skate and now I can’t get enough. On a day off, I love to head over to the ice skating rink and get on the ice for a few hours. Ideally, this is always followed up by coffee.
Who lives in your house?: I share a home with my incredibly supportive husband, two hilarious kids, a wild and crazy cat named Clover, and two boring hermit crabs named Kylo Ren and Hermie.
