Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: With a background in health care, education, and childcare, I have been preparing my entire life to be a doula!
What led you to become a Doula?: My eyes were first opened to the needs of women during pregnancy, birth and beyond even before I had my own children, as my friends began having babies. I was invited to a friend's birth and helped countless more at home after their babies were born. Helping people and answering their questions was normal for me, yet I had never heard of the word doula! Having personal experience with infertility, loss, and every type of birth possible, I learned the importance of educating myself. When my daughter became interested in becoming a doula, I learned about Postpartum & Infant Care Doulas and thought, "Where were they when I was struggling, alone at home with my babies!" I was excited to learn that through ProDoula I could learn the skills that would turn my experience and passion for helping others into a career!
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
Very hospitable, easy to talk to, accepting of others, encouraging
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I'm a little eclectic on who I listen to/read/follow. Many have some good points that I can usually glean something from and there are always those go to places you should be familiar with too (AAP, local Mom Support groups, La Leche League, CDC, even places like Mercola.com can be useful). WellnessMama.com and Kellymom.com are 2 great resources I like, but I've also gained some valuable insight from the only one available for my first birth, What to Expect When You're Expecting! Some parenting and pregnancy resources are very rigid and some very laid back, but having the resources and options available if needed are what I find to be important.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I wonder how she's doing? What great adventure she's in for! I wonder if this is her first? I wonder if she's getting the help or support she needs? I wonder if the baby's slept through the night yet?
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Peace of mind and confidence that supports her transitions and adjustments of being a new mom.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Pride and Prejudice has always been a favorite, but the Poldark series and Downton Abbey is a little more recent. I tend to watch what the other family members are watching for more than just enjoyment. (I have relinquished the control of the remote, lol!) I enjoy variety from serious action to historical romance to Wild Kratts. Every once in awhile you'll catch us trying to remember the Backyardigan songs or having a Disney sing off in the car too!
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Anywhere with my family! Cedar Point and Kalahari's been enjoyable with the kids, but the Smoky Mountains in the fall are always calling too!
What is your favorite food?: Tacos with all the fresh, simple and spicy toppings
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Curled up with a hot drink and a good book...or feet up in the sun and a cool drink and some good conversation.
Who lives in your house?: My Hubby (Scott), our four daughters (Amaris, Calen, Mikaela and Grace) and 2 Labs (more females, LOL!)-and me!
