Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: In January 2017, I had an amazing water birth at a local birth center which fueled my desire and passion for birth work. I also have the personal experience of two hospital births, as well as successful breastfeeding and milk donation. Friends and family often refer women to me for unmedicated birth tips and breastfeeding"Resourceful and love to help others." "Very knowledgeable and have such a calming and sweet demeanor...parents need that support." "This [doula work] fits you." "You are a blessing! And your path is divine!" support.
What led you to become a Doula?: After my own unmedicated/water birth experience, I realized how much education is lacking in the Black community in regards to birth and breastfeeding as a whole. I received many questions ranging from provider options and differences (midwife/OB) to insurance coverage. Many women of color do not know their options and therefore lack the ability to create their own birth stories.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
“Resourceful and love to help others.” “Very knowledgeable and have such a calming and sweet demeanor…parents need that support.” “This [doula work] fits you.” “You are a blessing! And your path is divine!”
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Organic Birth (movie). Husband Coached Childbirth (book). kellymom.com has GREAT information for breastfeeding moms.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I always wonder how far along she is and if she's excited to meet her baby, but most of all, I wonder if she's adequately prepared for labor!
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Education, support, and empowerment! Motherhood is hard, especially the first year. There's so much learning and adjusting that takes place during this time that women often lose themselves in the process (beginning in pregnancy). If I can help a new mom make sense of all the new pieces of her life, I've given her a lasting gift.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: King of Queens
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Los Angeles
What is your favorite food?: White Castles
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Hanging with family or catching up on rest!
Who lives in your house?: My husband of 9.5 years, Maulik, and our 3 beautiful children Kai (10), Malachi (8) and Micah (10 months).
