Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have a Masters degree in Developmental Biology. While my research experience does not particularly apply to birth work, my science training allows me to approach situations with a very different perspective. I am able to really focus on the facts and access the possible outcomes. In real life, “the facts” can vary greatly. They may be just how a client is feeling about something or it could be a test result from a doctor visit. Either way, I can offer support and guidance.
What led you to become a Doula?: Even though I had a lot of family around to assist with childcare during my own postpartum periods, I still really struggled. It is such a confusing, stressful, and emotional time. Especially for parents that have to return to work quickly. New parents need all the support they can get and I realized that I wanted to help with that.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I have always been the trusted friend, even earning the nickname of “Secret Girl” in high school because my friends knew they could confide in me. My friends know that I’m dependable, trust-worthy, a good listener, and a calming presence.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: The Birth Partner, Breastfeeding Made Easy, The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers, Baby 411.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: “How exciting!” It is such a life-altering moment in time—the transition into motherhood. Even if it isn’t the parent’s first child…There’s just this feeling of transformation. Of acclimating to a new way of life. Everything changes.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: The confidence that she is going to be a great parent! And the validation of her concerns and choices. It’s completely normal to have doubts, but she is the expert of her body, her baby, her family.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Parenthood. I haven’t missed a season of Survivor. Life of Pi. Dodgeball and The Wedding Singer because we all need a laugh now and then.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: I enjoy vacations to cabins in the woods equally with vacations to tropical locales. The first happens yearly, the second much less frequently.
What is your favorite food?: Pasta, bread, and chocolate.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: At the zoo or park with my kiddos and husband. Or indulging in some quiet time to read or shop alone.
Who lives in your house?: Myself, my husband (who is also my high-school sweetheart), my two amazing boys, and our adopted mutt.
