Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have three children of my own and had three very different birthing experiences with each and every one of them. I have a Bachelor's in psychology and I am an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). I have truly found my vocation in working with families and their babies.
What led you to become a Doula?: During my prenatal and postpartum period with my youngest 2 babies, I gobbled up any and all birth, pregnancy, and infant care resources. This is when I discovered what a doula was, and I was fascinated and intrigued. I felt compelled to pursue a career helping parents and babies breastfeed. In doing so I realized that to offer my clients the best all around possible care I needed to help them during the prenatal period and especially during birth as well. During my Prodoula training I realized all of my qualifications together are what my true vocation is. This is what I'm meant to do!
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
People tell me I am very calming and a good listener. I often have clients tell me that I am a great teacher and source of information. I have also been told that I am a bit quirky and not exactly what they expected, but I was what they didn’t know they needed.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Oh wow, there are so many. Of course being an IBCLC my absolute favorite is The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding. For birthing, I really like anything by Ina May Gaskin. We also have many businesses and hospitals in the Valley that offer amazing birthing classes. My absolute favorite though is to encourage clients to be their own best resource. Intuition, self awareness, and innate behaviors are extremely powerful things!!
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: My first thought is a hope and a prayer that they have a good support system and evidence-based information about as many things pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding related as possible.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: The best gift I can give is the gift of a unique experience that includes support and education perfectly tailored to their needs and desires.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Any film by Rob Zombie-there's that quirkiness showing up again, not what you expected, right?
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Ibiza without the kids and Mexico if we bring them
What is your favorite food?: Soup, there is nothing else as comforting as a warm bowl of nutritious goodness
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: My favorite way to spend a day off is without a doubt, with my family hiking at Mt. Charleston or swimming in the pool during the summer.
Who lives in your house?: My husband, daughter, my two sons, myself, and our three cats. The kids and my husband would love a dog, specifically a Labrador, but the cats and I aren't so sure about that yet:)
