Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: Laura has a BA in Early Childhood Education from birth to 5th grade. She is a trained Labor Doula with Prodoula. She was a nanny for 7 years before staying home with her own two boys. Currently, Laura is working with families to reduce fear and provide support during a major life event: Childbirth. Her passion for caring for others began in elementary school when her school principal nicknamed her “mommy.” Now as a real-life mom, Laura continues to support other moms and new families to navigate through the new experiences and challenges that pregnancy and parenthood may bring. Laura loves to cook and bake and even runs a small custom cookie business: Sugar Cupid, LLC. She also likes to read and travel with her family and friends.
What led you to become a Doula?: I have always been passionate about working closely with families and young children, which led me to a degree in Early Childhood during my undergrad program. The births of my own children ignited the flame to pursue birth work. Now as a mom of two, I feel mentally, emotionally, and physically prepared to help families on their journey toward and beyond childbirth.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I am friendly, bubbly, and optimistic. I am known to be highly organized and honest. I am sincere and very open and accepting. I am known to have a personality that people gravitate toward.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: My ob/gyn and midwives are always a valuable prenatal resource. I also value high quality Childbirth Education Classes. I strongly recommend a quality local prenatal yoga studio. Local facebook groups and mom groups were integral in supporting and suggesting activities and are FREE resources! In terms of fun and valuable parenting resources, I love Family Circle and Parents Magazine.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: So many changes they must be going through! I hope they are able to see all the good aspects and are not struggling to dwell on the challenges. She may not need any "help," but I wonder how I can support and encourage her?
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Help, assistance, and reassurance that they are doing the best they can, and that it is just enough.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Double Jeopardy-strong female role
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Anywhere tropical...and Disney World, with the family
What is your favorite food?: Anything with melted cheese....and cake! (this girl loves food)
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Does my day include my kids? Then it's a family activity like an amusement park, beach or zoo. Something high energy-out of the house! Without kids, I would still pick the beach, but a much different beach experience: a blanket, a book, and a nice nap!
Who lives in your house?: I live in a high energy house with two boys (4.5 and 3 years old) and my husband, who has almost as much energy as my boys :-)
