Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have taken several college courses in early childhood development/education. I have worked in childcare from ages 6 weeks and up. I volunteer with Girl Scouts and at women's and children's shelters. I have also volunteered many times doing service work with young mothers and children.
What led you to become a Doula?: My first experience of watching a baby come in to this world was at the age of 11 years old. At that time I watched my baby sister be born. I was even able to clip the umbilical cord. Twenty years later, I was able to be in the delivery room as my little sister gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. I have been fortunate enough to attend and be present for several of my friend's and family's labor experiences. However, being able to be there for my little sister as she was giving birth, and really be present and calming for her was one of the greatest moments in my life. I believe this moment is what really flipped the switch for me. Even after the birth her and her significant other expressed to me how helpful I was and how things would have been much different for them both had I not been there. I have always, by nature, been a very nurturing person and really felt that the birth process was one of the most amazing things. I first learned about doula work in 2010 and began educating myself at that time, always reading and learning something new. I really began making doula work my passion in 2016.
