Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I’m a mother of three children with very different delivery and postpartum experiences. I’ve come to realize that it takes a village with regards to pregnancy and postpartum stages in life and am passionate about serving others so they can feel confident and be validated.
What led you to become a Doula?: The birth of my first born was traumatic and seemed very much out of my control. I knew when I became pregnant with my second that I wanted her birth to be peaceful yet empowering. I learned about doulas through a friend and hired a labor doula for my daughter’s birth. Since then I’ve become extremely passionate about informed choice and doula work.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
People enjoy my positivity and ability to be a good listener. I’ve been encouraged by many people to become a doula.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I am slightly obsessed with birth videos! I check out YouTube for birth videos because I’m so awed by the process of labor and delivery. I find so much joy watching the faces of those supporting the mother as well as the look on the parent’s faces when their little one enters the world and makes those first few cries. I love reading, so books surrounding birth and parenting have been on my nightstand for a while now. Blogs can be a great way to gather information, as well as a resource for preparing for pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. I like KellyMom for breastfeeding support. ICAN and Birth Without Fear are great sites for those who have had traumatic birth, cesareans, and hope for VBAC or HBAC.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I love seeing pregnant women! I’m reminded of my own pregnancies and the joy I had feeling tiny flutters that grew into larger stretches and kicks. I always see beauty with pregnancy.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: The gift of being able to listen fully, presently, and without judgment is one that I cherish and enjoy bestowing upon others.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Love Actually – favorite movie hands down! I’m a sap and even used a song from the soundtrack for our wedding dance. I’ve also become smitten with Call the Midwife – it’s a show that airs on BBC but was picked up by Netflix. I find it interesting to see how birth is portrayed from another time and country.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Any place with warmth, sunshine, and a beach! We also love Galena for romantic getaways.
What is your favorite food?: Pizza – it’s something I could eat everyday!
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I love being with my family. Whether it’s playing outside, snuggling together to watch a movie, or playing a board game together, it’s my happy place.
Who lives in your house?: I live with my husband and two (soon to be three!) children.
