Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: Being a mom to three kids is the number one most beneficial experience that I think I bring to birth work. Having gone through it three times in three very different ways has stretched me to my limit and expanded my understanding of what it means to be a mom. I bring my empathy patience and hard work ethic with me everywhere I go.
What led you to become a Doula?: It started when I was 19. I took a workshop from a local midwife about doula work. At the time it wasn't very common but I thought it sounded like the coolest job in the world. I was given the opportunity to attend a birth after that training and then I was present when my mother gave birth to my brother. I had pretty much forgotten about it until a friend had a dream that I was a doula. I started exploring that possibility once again an decided that it was something I could definitely do.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I think people are able to open up easily when they are around me. I am always told that I am honest to a fault. I like to think that that is a positive lol.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: I have recently fallen in love with ProDoula and their basic, straightforward and evidence based information has been very refreshing as I further my training. I love Pam England and Birthing From Within, along with classics like Penny Simkin and Ina May Gaskin.
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I wonder if they're going to get their placenta encapsulated. It was such a lifesaver for me personally especially after one particular birth, that I wish people would just get it done. When I see someone with a new baby I wonder if they have the support they need and whether they need someone to talk to.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Presence and experience and honesty.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: The Never Ending Story
What is your favorite place to vacation?: Any tropical island.
What is your favorite food?: It used to be Pizza, but I can't do dairy anymore so Indian has taken the #1 spot.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: I like to go sightseeing locally with my husband and kids. Living in Las Vegas, we can feel like tourists anytime we feel like it.
Who lives in your house?: My husband, myself and my 3 kids.
