Meet Your ProDoula

Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: My sister has had 3 girls over the span of 14 years, and watching them grow has been amazing. More importantly, watching my sister grow into a great mom and provider for her children is very inspiring. Not just for my own future as a mother, but for the “sisterhood” of moms and new moms that can and will do what they must for their children. It’s exciting to me to see the switches from girl to woman; from woman to mother. So, basically, my background is not necessarily tangible. However, it is completely valid, as I have a strong passion to help support budding and already blossomed families.

What led you to become a Doula?: I have always, as far back as I can remember, had a deep love for babies. I was actually attending college for nursing, but I did not follow through to get my degree. Instead, I got a full-time job and started paying my debts, as well as saving and budgeting my money. A dear friend (pregnant at the time) showed me a documentary which mentioned doulas and midwives. I had not known what a doula was, but I loved seeing their energies. It very much resonated within myself. After watching the documentary, I spent my free time researching facts about pregnancy and labor. As someone who is hesitant to change, considering leaving my mundane full-time job at a cabinet shop was huge for me. I made the decision to look into midwifery and see where I could go with it. It was highly advised that I work as a doula for a few years before committing to midwifery. The more I thought about becoming a doula, the more I knew that it was the right path for me. I squeezed in 4 separate trainings (3 of which were ProDoula) in a month’s time and now I am out and about as a pre-certified doula and postpartum placenta specialist.

What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:

Calming presence, great listener, caring, soft-spoken, friendly, loving, awkwardly funny.

What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Pregnancy/Baby forums like &, The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin, random blogs, and fellow doulas!

What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: For a pregnant woman: “I wonder how she wants to give birth: home birth, birth center, hospital, wilderness?!” “Pregnancy is such a beautiful process! I hope she is enjoying it.” “Note to self: don’t stare too long at that belly!!” For a new mom: “Let me just do a speedy walk-by and take a glance at that little squishy baby…” “You do your thing, girl! You got this mom thing in the (diaper) bag!” “I can’t wait to make and have babies of my own!!!!!!”

What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Definitely the unending support that can help her reach an untapped ability she never knew she had.

What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Favorite TV shows are It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Flight of the Conchords, and my favorite movie is The Wall (Pink Floyd).

What is your favorite place to vacation?: Anywhere where I can snorkel and sunbathe. Also, anywhere with gorgeous mountainous scenery is always a win.

What is your favorite food?: Sushi, spaghetti squash, and anything involving avocado.

What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Netflix and not-so-healthy snacks with my love and my little dog Pip.

Who lives in your house?: I’m currently living in an apartment in my parent’s basement, separate from the upstairs!
