Meet Your ProDoula

Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I did a lot of research to prepare for my own two births and I’ve developed a vast knowledge about pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period as well as a strong network of community resources. I also became active in breastfeeding and parent support groups and found I naturally fell into the role of being a listening ear and a non-judgmental support person. I have a professional background in public relations, which has made me an effective communicator and I want to pass those skills onto my clients so they can more effectively communicate their needs to their providers and others in their lives.

What led you to become a Doula?: My own personal experiences with pregnancy and birth inspired me to become a doula. Having to make some difficult decisions during my labor with my first child, I realized the value in having a supportive and unbiased birth team and began my own journey to help other women and families. I also realized postpartum, how isolating it can be for moms after they have a baby and I want to help raise awareness that there is support available and you don’t have to be alone.

What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:

People often describe me as peaceful, calm and kind. They find me an easy person to talk to and say that I am a good listener. I think this helps me easily tune into the needs of women and families.

What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Ina May Gaskin’s Guide to Natural Childbirth; Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn and The Birth Partner by Simkin; The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by La Leche League International; No Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley; Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids by Dr. Markham and kellymom.com for breastfeeding resources

What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: First, excitement for her and I want to give her a hug and ask her how she is doing. I wish I could sit with her over tea and just let her vent all her feelings without worry of being judged.

What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Confidence and the support to trust their own intuition

What is your favorite TV show or movie?: I love HBO series like Game of Thrones and WestWorld

What is your favorite place to vacation?: The Adirondacks—I’m a mountain girl.

What is your favorite food?: Dessert

What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: Hiking with my kids

Who lives in your house?: My husband and two young children
