Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: My background is mentoring girls to women. By listening to her ideas and concerns I help her figure out the best way to achieve the most successful outcome for her. I find I provide the same type of support to women in her pregnancy and postpartum visits. As a Certified Postpartum Placenta Specialist, I am fully trained through Pro-doula and am confident to carry out what is required of me. I am dedicated to all I do with integrity and the highest of standards. I want very happy clients!
What led you to become a Doula?: My love for birth work began when I mentored an expecting teenage girl who was living in a homeless shelter for girls. I accompanied her to all her OB appointments and the birth of her baby, just doing what is in my nature to do. After the birth, her birth doula highly encouraged me to become a doula. When researched what a doula does, I knew right away being a doula is what I have been created to be. It's as though it was what I have been preparing for my whole life.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
Some people say, I am calming, soothing, compassionate, dedicated, trustworthy, and knowledgeable. I have been told I am easy to talk because I care and listen to them. They don’t feel judged. Also people say they see I have a heart for families and women (and I do)! Others comment about my sense of humor and I am lively, outgoing and spontaneous.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: My go-to books are The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin, Pregnancy Childbirth and the Newborn by Penny Simpkin et 'al, Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, Childbirth Without Fear by Grantly Dick-Read, The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by La Leche League International, and Guide to Breastfeeding by Jack Newman and Teresa Pitman, and more. My go-to online resources are: EvidenceBasedBirth.com, Spinningbabies.com, Infantrisk.com, medmilk.com and Kellymom.com
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: My initial response is to smile and think endearing thoughts of her. I wonder what her future could bring. But many thoughts come to mind. Anywhere from pure joy for her to wondering, "Is she happy? Alone?"
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: My support. My experience. My compassion.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: T.V.? Who has time :) Actually my husband and I just binge watched "Blacklist". A year or so ago I binge watched. "Call the Midwife"... Of course :)
