Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: In addition to my doula work, I am a private violin and viola teacher. In teaching private lessons, I have to pay attention to each student and treat them as their own unique person, with their own skills, challenges, learning styles, and beliefs. This transfers easily to doula work; every mother and couple is different in their philosophies and desires, and every pregnancy and labor is unique in any number of ways. I strive to work with each mother and couple to help support them to make their own unique birth experience.
What led you to become a Doula?: When I first became pregnant with my daughter, I had my own beliefs and philosophies about pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Throughout those 9 months, I began to read and read and read, ultimately changing my whole idea of what I wanted! I quickly became fascinated with the whole process: the natural development of the baby, the many options during labor, the variety of birth positions and philosophies. It wasn’t long before I decided I wanted to help women through their own birth adventures.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
I am so caring and thoughtful. I put others before myself (almost to a fault). I am easy to talk to. I am a great listener. I am understanding and flexible. I am able to see the good in everybody.
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: Apps: What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Ovia, Full Term, The Wonder Weeks; Books: Homebirth in the Hospital, Baby-Led Weaning, Natural Birth the Bradley Way; Online Resources: Kellymom.com
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: My first thought is usually: Yay! Babies! Then I hope she knows that I am here to support her - this is her birth and her experience, and I hope she has the best experience she can have!
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: My support and my ears. Know that I am here for you. Are you struggling and just need someone to vent to? My ears are yours. Is your baby just the most adorable thing you’ve seen? Tell me! Do you feel like labor is not going as planned? I’m here to help!
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: Friends is always a classic in my book, though I do like juicy dramas like Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal as well. Then there are the sappy shows like Parenthood and This is Us.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: That really depends on what I’m needing at the time. Sometimes I just want to be secluded in the back woods to really experience nature and reset for a few days. Other times I just want to lay out on a beach. Then there are the times I want to explore and learn about a new place or culture.
What is your favorite food?: I love strawberries. Also steak.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: With my family, either laying around in pjs all day or going out. As long as we’re together, I’m happy!
Who lives in your house?: Michael, my husband; Abigail, our daughter; and Louie, our 6 year old puppy.
