Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have cared for and loved babies for as long as I can remember. I see the strength it takes to become a mom and I have always wanted to support that. I have been a full-time nanny, pre-school teacher, on-call babysitter and encourager.
What led you to become a Doula?: I have always thought pregnancy and birth are beautiful. In the births that I have witnessed I always keep my eyes on the new mom. Sometimes when a new baby enters the world, all attention shifts to them. Although I am amazed at this new life, I don't want to discredit what the mom just did. Supporting the emotional and physical struggles that can come with birth and reducing fear is something I feel I was made to do.
What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:
What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: "The Birth Partner" by Penny Simkin, "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Dr. Harvey Karp, ACOG
What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I think pregnant women are beautiful and strong. I am always amazed at what the female body is capable of doing but I also know pregnant women don't always feel as amazing as they look and I want to encourage them to enjoy feeling their baby move inside them and to take time to rest and be in awe of their body. A brand new mom is usually a little frantic, exhausted and maybe a little overwhelmed. When I see her, I want to let her take a shower, eat and rest. I want to help her feel confident in her postpartum body and with her new baby. I want to support her and her family in however they need.
What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Confidence. I want to give them confidence in their intuition when everyone has an opinion. I want to give them confidence in how they feed their baby. I want to give them confidence in their new bodies. I want to give them confidence in how their baby sleeps. And maybe a yummy tomato and cheese tortellini soup, too.
What is your favorite TV show or movie?: I love 1950s musicals and 1980s comedies.
What is your favorite place to vacation?: I love places that are full of real locals and don't have a bunch of tourist trinkets
What is your favorite food?: Any and all the fruit!!
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: If it is cold and rainy I want some warm socks and movies all day on the couch with my husband. If it's a beautiful warm day I want to do work in the yard and grill some burgers on our back porch.
Who lives in your house?: My husband, Aaron, our two dogs, cat, hamster and chickens live with me in our cozy little house!
