Meet Your ProDoula

Background/Experience that you think is beneficial to Doula work: I have cared for and loved babies for as long as I can remember. I see the strength it takes to become a mom and I have always wanted to support that. I have been a full-time nanny, pre-school teacher, on-call babysitter and encourager.

What led you to become a Doula?: I have always thought pregnancy and birth are beautiful. In the births that I have witnessed I always keep my eyes on the new mom. Sometimes when a new baby enters the world, all attention shifts to them. Although I am amazed at this new life, I don't want to discredit what the mom just did. Supporting the emotional and physical struggles that can come with birth and reducing fear is something I feel I was made to do.

What are some positive comments made about you by other people?:

“Micaleigh was a source of strength and confidence to me throughout my pregnancy, and when at times I felt overwhelmed or anxious she calmed me and helped me remain focused. After doctor visits I discussed developments with her, and she gave me her full attention. I was reassured and impressed by how knowledgeable she is, which allowed me to place full confidence in her. She also gives excellent hand massages! I highly recommend her.”
“What a wonderful example of someone with natural mothering instincts! Micaleigh was a wonderful doula, and I would highly recommend her to anyone. She was always so responsive to anything I might have questions about. Even though I had a scheduled inducing and epidural I was so glad to have her with us during such a stressful time. She was an excellent support for us and extremely valuable. At first, we did not consider a doula, but looking back, I am so glad that we decided that Micaleigh was part of our birth plan!”
“I had 3 kids – 7, 4, and 7 months – when I found out I was pregnant again. I didn’t know Micaleigh very well then, but I needed help and she offered, so I accepted. Best decision ever. She always knew exactly what needed to be done. I never had to ask; she just assessed and took quiet action. She carries herself with gentleness and grace. We quickly became wonderful friends as she cared for me and my children. She loves our family, and it shows. We love and appreciate her dearly!!”

What are your favorite pregnancy/parenting resources?: "The Birth Partner" by Penny Simkin, "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Dr. Harvey Karp, ACOG

What thoughts come to mind when you see a pregnant woman or brand new mom?: I think pregnant women are beautiful and strong. I am always amazed at what the female body is capable of doing but I also know pregnant women don't always feel as amazing as they look and I want to encourage them to enjoy feeling their baby move inside them and to take time to rest and be in awe of their body. A brand new mom is usually a little frantic, exhausted and maybe a little overwhelmed. When I see her, I want to let her take a shower, eat and rest. I want to help her feel confident in her postpartum body and with her new baby. I want to support her and her family in however they need.

What is the best gift you can give a new mom (as a Doula)?: Confidence. I want to give them confidence in their intuition when everyone has an opinion. I want to give them confidence in how they feed their baby. I want to give them confidence in their new bodies. I want to give them confidence in how their baby sleeps. And maybe a yummy tomato and cheese tortellini soup, too.

What is your favorite TV show or movie?: I love 1950s musicals and 1980s comedies.

What is your favorite place to vacation?: I love places that are full of real locals and don't have a bunch of tourist trinkets

What is your favorite food?: Any and all the fruit!!

What is your favorite way to spend a day off?: If it is cold and rainy I want some warm socks and movies all day on the couch with my husband. If it's a beautiful warm day I want to do work in the yard and grill some burgers on our back porch.

Who lives in your house?: My husband, Aaron, our two dogs, cat, hamster and chickens live with me in our cozy little house!
